Are there any problems with the BMW R1150GS?
I m trying to Prep my R1150GS (2003/10000 miles on clock) for an overland trip to Asia. Can anyone tell me some of the common problems/faults they have found, or things that have broke while riding this bike. I know on the whole they are generally reliable, trying to find out some of the more specific issues people have encountered.

Bleeding Your Clutch Check the fluid level in the master cylinder. Locate the bleed screw on the slave cylinder. Attach the hose to the bleed screw. Open the bleed screw on the slave cylinder. Have a friend press the clutch pedal in and hold it. Close the bleed screw. Have your friend release the clutch pedal.
Are there any problems with the BMW 1100?
The 1100 is said to have a healthy beam, so not such an issue there. I also fitted front suspension wishbone protectors so that a fall would not cause the swinging of the barrs to damage the wishbone or steering stop.
How to troubleshoot a clutch that won’t fully disengage?
Step 1: Collect all tools and your creeper and place them out of the way. Step 2: Raise the vehicle. Using a floor jack that is recommended for the weight of the vehicle, lift under the vehicle at its specified jacking points until the wheels are completely off the ground. Step 3: Remove the jack stands and keep them far away from the vehicle.
Where is the bleed valve on a clutch 1150?
On (2) above– most of us that bled those 1150 clutches just removed that darn check valve assembly & tossed it in the trash then replaced it with a standard bleed screw. Problem is, that check valve is factory loc-tited into the hose fitting with a special sealer (VERY difficult to remove).
How does a clutch bleed on a bike work?
The clutch bleed is not complicated but it is not straight forward either. There is a remote (service) hose coming off the slave cylinder that goes around the R/H side of the bike. On the end of that service (factory fill) hose is a check valve assembly. In the end of that check valve assembly is a small spring loaded check ball.
What to do if your clutch fluid bleeds?
You’ll need a caliper bleed nipple as on the left caliper to screw into the end of the valve IF you can get the flat access cap unscrewed. Sometimes, the cap is corroded in place making it impossible to remove. Side note: my trusted auto mechanic I met thru the BMW dealership I worked at.

No FD issues in 44k miles. Problems I did or will have to correct, LH cam chain tensioner, I replaced the spring alone, 10 minutes and less than $2. Also the pivot bearings need adjustment or replacement. I’ll try to adjust them when I borrow the last tool I need, a 30mm socket.

Are there any problems with the BMW ukgser 1100?
As on ANY bike, there are thousands of places it can break due to your own maintenance faults, crashes, wear, etc. Maybe keep an eye on the UKGSer 1100/1150 technical section, to see what probs people have encountered and fixes. It also educates you from real-life incidents, that may become very handy.

Is the 1100 GS the same as the 1150 GS?
Don’t forget to consider the 1100 GS ! Same ABS brakes as the pre 2003 1150s, lower first gear similar to the 1150 GSA and usually cheaper to purchase as well. Other than some plastic and 5 vs 6 speed gearbox, they really are the same bike.
