Why does my car keep going through alternators?
It is possible that the drive belt has broken or come off the pulley, or the tensioner went bad completely. Alternators put out alternating current, and the battery needs direct current to charge, so there is a voltage rectifier that converts it, and it can suddenly go bad, too.
Can an alternator mess up a battery?
Battery dies. Obviously, batteries sometimes fail on their own–but a bad alternator can actually cause the battery to drain because it’s failing to recharge it. If your battery goes dead, have the alternator checked when replacing the battery so it doesn’t happen again.
Is the battery on my Subaru Outback working?
Across-the-board, there are very few other issues with the Outback for this year so if the battery works then this is a fairly reliable vehicle. The problem is the battery is the biggest issue and many drivers have already reported it as a problem.
What should the voltage be on a Subaru alternator?
Charge the battery again and start the car. Then, with the engine running at around 1000 rpm, measure the voltage across the battery — should be around 14 V, but I suspect you will find it lower.
Why is the battery on my Subaru not charging?
The first time, it was on the freeway going 60mph when suddenly it lost all power and died, the AT Oil Temp light came on and the check engine light came on, and the battery was too dead to turn the engine over. No battery light came on, no gauges in the red.
How old is the battery in a Subaru?
The battery passed both tests, furthermore given its behavior it seems to be capable of holding a charge just fine. The battery is however 5 years old. I cleared the errors from the computer, used a special spray cleaner on the existing Master Valve Control, replaced the alternator, and used a battery terminal cleaning/maintenance kit.
