Pistons move up and down in their cylinders with a tight fit between the piston and cylinder wall. While the problem could infect just one cylinder-piston combination, more than one is likely affected.

At 110K km (68K miles) my Toyota matrix (1.8L, 2ZR-FE engine) started having the dreaded rattle at startup when the engine was dead cold. (TSB 0087-09). Since the car was out of warranty I paid to have it repaired for approx. $600 canuck dollars by the Toyota dealer where I bought the car used.

The car is now at 230K (142K miles), 2.5 years later, and the rattle recently became noticeable again; it could have something to do with the colder weather being back here in Canada but my wife swears it was doing it earlier this year. I have 2 questions. 1. Has anyone else had this work done and found it to come back?
