A large proportion of this water comes from protected or uninhabited mountain ash forests in the Yarra Ranges east of Melbourne, where more than 157,000 hectares have been reserved for the primary purpose of harvesting water. This water is then stored in various covered storages, including the Thomson, Upper Yarra, Silvan and Cardinia reservoirs.
