What ports need to be open for Nessus scanner?
TCP port 139 (NetBIOS) and TCP port 445 (SMB) are required to be open for the Nessus scanner to complete a credentialed scan.

What is override automatic firewall detection?
On Windows or Mac OS X, the scanner does not do a TCP scan and instead uses the SYN scanner to avoid performance issues native to those operating systems. If you enable this option, you can also set the Override Automatic Firewall Detection option. When enabled, this setting overrides automatic firewall detection.

Why is Nessus scanning ports outside of the port range?
Nessus Scan policies have the ability to control what ports are scanned. During a Nessus Scan, traffic going to ports outside of this range may be visible. If credentials for a Windows or Linux/UNIX target are provided, netstat may enumerate open ports outside of the port range.
How many common ports does Nessus scan by default if set to all how many ports will it scan?

Most Nessus scan policies have the port scan range set to “default.” When set using the keyword ‘default,’ the scanner will scan approximately 4,600 common ports.
