What kind of oil does a Triumph Bonneville use?

As mentioned in this thread, the importance of cleaning the sludge tube and oil gallaries is vital. As for the 4 valve plunger pump, they were fitted to the TSS and later models to reduce the possibility of solid particles holding the ball valves off their seats and reducing the oil pumping capacity of the pump and wet sumping.
Do you need an oil pump on a triumph?
The stock Triumph oil pump works well and is very reliable. Moving up to a Morgo unit is probably not needed, but is in the “nice to have” category. I fitted one only because I installed a full-flow oil filter kit and wanted to make sure the pump was up to the task of pushing the oil through the filter.

Can a triumph 2 valve plunger pump wet sump?
A lot of people mistakenly think that Triumph 2-valve and 4-valve plunger pumps preclude the possibility of wet-sumping. But not so. Wet-sumping is what happens when oil drains through the pump into the crankcase. Normally, there’s not much clearance between the crankshaft and the crankcase.

When the bike is restarted, the piston comes down, pressurises the crankcase, and pumps the crankcase oil either out of the engine breather, and/or forces it up the bore past the piston into the combustion chamber.
