What kind of ATV will not stay running?
I know, this isn’t the ATV forum, but I’m hoping maybe one of the mechanical brains of IDO will see this in the general discussion forum faster and have some ideas. I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O. and tonight while plowing snow, it died on me.
Why does my snowmobile not run at idle?
I can get it to start but it will only run at idle. If I try to give it any gas, it sputters and dies. Sometimes I can get it to rev up but after a few seconds, it will start to die out. It almost seems like its either flooding out or not getting gas. It is not fuel injected so I don’t think it is anything electrical.
Why does my snowmobile keep going the other way?
Maybe the safety cut out in the throttle mechanism. Throttle cable may need adjustment. On the handlebar just below the throttle is the cable adjustment. Have to move the little rubber boot out of the way. Then can be adjusted with your fingers. If you adjust too far one way and it dont run at all you know then to go the other way.

You will find the proper steps for troubleshooting an ATV that is not getting a spark further down this post. If the spark plug is still dry after cranking the engine for a few seconds, you know that fuel, for some reason, is not getting to the cylinder.
How to start an ATV that wont start?
1 Remove the spark plug from the cylinder-head and connect it to the spark-plug wire or ignition coil. 2 Grab the plug wire and hold the plug about 1/8th of an inch away from the cylinder head. 3 Activate the starter. 4 As the motor turns, you should see repetitive bright blue spark arching from the spark plug to the cylinder head.
What to do if your ATV won’t shift?
If you try to shift on an electric shift ATV, you may hear the shift motor moving, but it does not shift completely. You may find that the problem is worse at colder temperatures. Fixing this issue is relatively easy. All you need to do is replace the old gummed-up grease with all-temperature, white lithium grease.
