What is the purpose of the Eyewire?
Launched in 2012, EyeWire is a game that uses crowdsourcing to help map the brain. Anyone can play and players need no scientific background. They need only be curious and enjoy solving puzzles. The game is based on mapping the retina — a part of the eye, but also part of the central nervous system.
Why did Eyewire pick the retina?
Instead of fighting aliens, the players have to pick out specific cells in picture of tissue from a part of the eye called the retina and color them in. As he told me a year ago, he needed to recruit a lot of gamers to play his game because the retina is a jungle of entangled branches of neurons.
What has Eyewire accomplished so far?
To date we have completed over 3,000 neurons in Eyewire. For a sense of how our rate of progress has improved consider: it took us from Jan 2012 (public beta) until March 2014 to reconstruct 100 neurons. In November, 2016, we reconstructed 111 neurons.
