What causes the oil to come out of the dipstick?
I also have a quirk with one car that confused our mechanic. In normal operation the rubber O-ring seal at the dipstick top seals so well that air pressure builds up in the tube and drives the oil out at the bottom. So the FIRST time you pull the dipstick, it show NO oil on it, and you rush to add a quart.

With the engine hot, park on level ground and shut off the engine. Wait a couple minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan. Open the hood and find the dipstick on the engine – a metal loop or grip sticking out of the end of a metal stalk. If you can’t find it, your owner’s manual should help.

What happens if there is no oil on the dipstick?
If the oil is below the bottom, it is too low for the dipstick to measure. Depending on how low, oil starvation could occur. If there is no oil on your dipstick, refill it ASAP.

What to do if there is no oil in the oil pan?
The dipstick doesn’t touch the bottom of the oil pan, but if no oil is showing on the dipstick you have no way of knowing how much oil you have left, so don’t let it get that low. I’m assuming the car was running and sounded OK.
