What causes oil to leak from bottom of rocker box?

The leak was between the bottom rocker section and the jug. I bought a complete kit from Harley that included all the gaskets and other pieces necessary to rebuild both rockers. When I examined the bad gasket, I noticed that it was a fiber gasket that developed a hair line split which allowed the oil to leak out.

What should I use to seal my rocker box?

The important step is to use some Permatex (or suitable) gasket sealer/adhesive to hold the gaskets in place during assembly.

No leaks on either of them. One thing I do evey time with either of my bikes is I let them warm up fully before I ride. If the roacker boxes are not hot to the touch before revin’ the engine, the base and head gaskets can blow out easily. I replaced the rocker box gaskets on a friend’s ’98 Heritage.

Took apart again and found I had pinched the gasket. 2nd time I made sure I didn’t do that again.

What to do when oil comes out of the hose?

If you can’t see the oil coming back into the tank, disconnect the oil return line, take the spark plugs out of the heads, and spin the engine with the starter. OIl should come out of the hose in squirts. If not, you have an oil pump problem. If it does come out of the hose, everything should be alright.
