What causes black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe?
This usually means the valve guides or seals are bad, or possibly a cracked ring, which would allow oil to get into the combustion chamber. An engine that is running rich will generally have black exhaust. If there is oil getting in the combustion chamber, the smoke will be bluish.
What happens if one of the exhaust pipes breaks?
If any of the exhaust pipes or tubes break or crack, they can cause an exhaust leak that will result in an excessively noisy engine. The exhaust may produce a hissing or tapping sound that may become more pronounced during acceleration.
What happens when your engine is running rich?
When your engine is running rich, it will cause bad emissions. A rich air-fuel mixture will create black smoke, which will then come out from your exhaust pipe. If it looks by your exhaust pipe like you have a diesel engine, but you don’t – then it is really time to check the air-fuel mixture. High carbon monoxide content
Why does combustion take place outside the exhaust pipe?
Combustion does not take place near cold cylinder walls. That partial combustion gets deposited in the exhaust pipe. If the deposits are really thick and coating everything even outside the exhaust pipe then you probably have a fueling or timing problem that needs fixed.

Why is the tailpipe of my car Black?
Taking the car out for a fast highway drive every so often is a good idea to clear soot and condensation and clean things through. In a modern fuel injected engine though, black soot in the tailpipe could indicate a problem with injectors or fuel system metering maybe. Having the injectors checked initially would be a good plan.
