When was Watford Junction station added to the LNWR?
The company was eventually absorbed in 1881 by the burgeoning LNWR whose station it shared at Watford Junction. Anxious of the growing influence of the Metropolitan Railway in north-west London, the LNWR added a short branch line to Croxley Green under the New Lines Act. Works commenced in 1908 and the new route opened on 15 June 1912.
Where was Watford West station before the Croxley Green branch?
Notes: Before the Croxley Green branch opened in 1912 the only intermediate station, which was a mile west of Watford High Street, was to be called Hagden Lane; by the time it opened on 15 June 1912 it had become Watford West. As built, the station had a single platform in a cutting on the up side of the line.
Why was the BR sign removed from Watford West station?
These signs indicated that the name was now West Watford: this was presumably an error, and must have perplexed passengers as the old BR Watford West sign was also left in place. The maroon BR (LMR) sign on the front of the station was also removed at this time.
