What is an IAC or idle air control solenoid?

The Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid allows the Computer (PCM) to accurately control engine idle under a variety of conditions. The IAC solenoid is driven by an output signal from the PCM and allows intake airflow to bypass the throttle plates. In addition to normal idle speed control the IAC solenoid also functions as a deceleration dashpot and allows for idle changes during periods of increased engine load (A/C, electrical).

While you are most likely to notice engine hesitation when you’re accelerating, engine surging can occur intermittently. Figure 3. Reduced engine power can be attributed to a clogged fuel filter or faulty spark plug wires.

Why does a 4 cylinder engine have a rough idle?

In fact, in the end it may still be there to some degree because of the nature of a 4 cylinder engine. 4 cylinder engines fire every 180º of crank shaft rotation. Because of this, the crank spends a LOT of time in rotation before the next power stroke. This creates a ‘choppy’ power delivery that may be most noticeable at idle.

Why does my Audi A4 stall when I start the car?

Oxygen Sensor – The oxygen sensors measure the exhaust gasses after they exit the combustion chamber. The ECU uses this data to make adjustments to the air/fuel mixture. If one of them has gone bad, then it could lead to stalling.

The computer then commands the idle air control valve to open to the correct setting. However, any vacuum leak in the system can screw this up. The extra air leans out the mixture and the engine starts to die. So the computer tries to compensate by adding fuel.
