When did the Yamaha Virago get a gas tank?
Yamaha Virago. The bike was redesigned in 1984, switching from a rear mono-shock to a dual-shock design, and adding a tear-drop shaped gas tank. That year, Harley-Davidson, fearful of the inroads in the US market made by the Virago and other new Japanese cruiser-style motorcycles, pushed for a tariff on imported bikes over 700 cc.

When did the Yamaha Virago DragStar come out?
1995: Yamaha XV250S Virago launched as a custom cruiser; a baby brother for larger Viragos: the highly-regarded XV535, the XV750 and the XV1100 (all now discontinued). Colour changes only until 2001, when it was replaced by the XVS250 Dragstar, which uses the same engine. Something to do with emissions laws… None.

From ’81 – ’83 all Viragos were shaft drive, mono-shock, with the exception of the “Euro” models which were also mono shock but had chain drive. In ’84 Yamaha went to the more cruiser-like look. As part of this, the mono-shock was dropped in favor of dual shocks for all models from then on. From ’83 on, all large models were shaft drive.
