Can You program a 2005 Saab 9-3 key?

I bought a new key for my 2005 Saab 9-3 and I want to program it. For those who are familiar with this procedure, when it asks to insert a valid key , is it the previous key (working) or the new key that I acquired? I get an error message at the end of the procedure and I wonder if this is not because I have inserted the new key at the wrong time.
