Are freehub bodies interchangeable?
Most Shimano Freehub bodies are interchangeable. The exceptions are: FH-7850 and FH-7900 Dura-Ace bodies, which have returned to a splined attachment between Freehub body and hub shell, but it is larger than the usual one. It is similar but not interchangeable between these two models.
Can I upgrade my freehub body?
Yes. You can replace just the hub, but you’ll likely need new spokes, and a decent mechanic will charge $50+ for the job. Unless you have a really nice rim, that’s not worth it. Buying a new wheel makes more sense.
Can I fit any freehub?
freehub standard accepts only XD cassettes. There are 10, 11 and 12 speed cassette versions (same XD freehub body). Many wheel and hub manufacturers make XD compatible freehub bodies that can be screwed onto the hub instead of the old Shimano compatible freehub.
Are SRAM and Shimano Freehubs the same?
The Sram 10 speed cassette is the same width as 8/9 speed, whereas with Shimano it’s 1mm narrower. Sram XD driver is created to allow the smallest cog to be 10 teeth for high gear ratio. It’s lighter and more durable than HG freehubs because cassettes won’t gouge into the splines.
Can you service a Shimano freehub?
Much of the process is similar to a hub overhaul. To service the freehub, begin by removing rear cogs. The common Shimano® freehub uses internal loose ball bearing, pawls and springs. However, if the bearings are worn out and require replacing, it is very likely the entire freehub is needing replacement.

Can you put SRAM freehub on a Shimano hub?
This means you can’t put a SRAM freehub body onto a Shimano hub. It is best to stick within the brand to get the right body. If you have a DT Swiss rear hub shell, then you’ll want to get a DT Swiss freehub. Some brands, like Campagnolo, use a specific Campagnolo freehub body that is different than Shimano and SRAM.
Can a rear hub be swapped with a freehub body?
Some, but not all rear hub bodies, allow for the easy replacement/swapping of freehub bodies so, for example, you could switch between a Shimano and SRAM XD driver cassette attachment interface. And indeed, mode of cassette attachment is one of the key differentiators when shopping freehub bodies.
