What is a lid speculum?
Current wire eyelid specula,such as Kratz-Barraquer speculum, are used to expose the ocular surface by preventing eyelids from closing. They must be strong enough to resist orbicularis-induced reduction of the palpebral aperture and forced eyelid closure.
How does a microkeratome work?
In traditional LASIK, an instrument known as a microkeratome cuts a thin, hinged flap into the eye’s clear surface (cornea). The flap then is lifted for application of laser energy that reshapes the eye for vision correction. Replacing the flap in LASIK promotes faster healing.
Does eye speculum hurt?
This part of the process is pain free and not too uncomfortable. Next a technician will place a speculum on your eyes to hold your eyelids open. This is one of the aspects of LASIK that tends to frighten people, but rest assured, the numbing drops ensure that your eyes will not dry out while the speculum is in place.
Does a lid speculum hurt?
You may feel pressure, kind of like somebody touching your eye, but generally no pain. The only time that you may have pain is if you try to squeeze against the little lid speculum we put to hold your eyelids apart.
Does microkeratome hurt?
The procedure consists of using an excimer laser or microkeratome to reshape the cornea, the transparent front part of your eye. The discomfort a patient may feel during the procedure is usually during the flap creation portion.
