What are turbo vanes?
Turbo Vanes are a row of vanes fitted inside the the turbocharger which will match the boost required from th engine at low engine RPM. The VNT Turbo Vanes will close thereby giving a rapid boost and response time. They also lower the LAG prone to the wastegate type turbochargers.
How does a vane position sensor work?
The vane position sensor relays a signal to the ECM which then sends a signal to the VGT actuator telling it what position the vanes should be in. When this sensor fails, the ECM provides incorrect signals to the solenoid, which creates turbo issues and therefore performance issues.
Can you clean a turbo vane position sensor?
Percieved vane sticking might actually be caused from a bad vane position sensor. The easiest way to clean out the turbo vanes is to floor the go pedal and blow it out….work it and get it hot! I do this at least once a day to make sure it stays clean.
What is code P003A?
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P003A stands for “Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control “A” Position Exceeded.” The P003A is set by the powertrain control module (PCM) when it perceives that the desired and actual turbo vane positions do not match during the learn procedure.
What causes turbo vanes to stick?
When soot, carbon, rust and other forms of corrosion build up in the turbine housing, it can cause the vanes that direct exhaust gasses across the turbine wheel to seize up. Depending on which position the vanes get stuck in, you’ll either have great response down low but no top-end power, or vice-versa.
