Where is the FSD located on a diesel engine?
We like to call it the Fuel Solenoid Driver, or FSD. This is an electronic driver that mounts on the side of the injection pump. When in operation, the FSD gives off a great deal of heat. It is mounted on the side of the injection pump in order to dissipate the heat, by using the flow of the diesel fuel through the injection pump.
Why does a FSD cooler need to be mounted?
Failure of the Optical sensor within the injection pump may occur due to excessive heat, as well the heat transferred to the fuel causes it to lose lubricating qualities resulting in mechanical pump failure Our FSD cooler allows the FSD to be remotely mounted, and to be cooled by airflow.
How does fuel line insulation keep fuel lines cool?
Heatshield Products developed our patented FR Fuel Rail Heat Shields™ to create an easy solution to this problem. Our fuel line insulation wraps around the fuel rails to shield them from the radiated heat in the engine compartment.
Why do fuel lines need a heat shield?
This leads to increased fuel temperatures, and hot gasoline hurts performance. Without a car heat shield, the temperature of fuel increases causing it to become more vaporous. In a closed system, that can create pressure that will cause fuel-flow irregularities, especially within the fuel rails.
What does a failed FSD do to the engine?
A failed FSD will not display an engine light. Pictured above the FSD is a small black box about the size of a deck of cards bolted to the side of your injection pump. It is an amplifier that receives signals from the engine computer to pulse the fuel solenoid which tells the injection pump to send fuel to the engine.

Where is the FSD located on a GM Truck?
It has 2 power transistors mounted on the back that generate heat that has to be dissipated. The injector pump is mounted deep in the center valley of the engine in a very hot environment. The FSD is exposed to heat that can cause it to fail over time. The Stanadyne DS-4 pump has been used on GM trucks since 1993.
