How heavy should your DofE rucksack be?
We recommend carrying no more than 25% of your body weight on expedition. Think about how long your expedition is and how much you will be carrying. Rucksacks are measured by their litre capacity – internal and expansion. For example, 60:70 means internal capacity of 60 litres, plus an extra 10 litre expansion.
Can you do DofE Gold without doing silver?
Can you skip Silver DofE and go straight to Gold? You can complete the Gold DofE award without having completed Silver, however it will take longer (it doesn’t make a difference if you’ve completed Bronze).
Is DofE worth doing?
DofE is an excellent way to meet new people and make new friends. Working together in the wilderness on your expedition forms new bonds and great memories. Through volunteering, you meet many different people in a working environment, which prepares you for the working world.
How far do you walk on Gold DofE?
How far do I have to walk? Gold expeditions require 8 hours of planned activity per day. This is roughly 20Km walking per day.
What should I pack for gold DofE?
PERSONAL KIT
- Sleeping bag.
- Waterproof compression stuff sack (5/10/15 litre)
- Whistle.
- Head torch and spare batteries.
- Personal first aid kit.
- Expedition food (including emergency rations)
- Water bottle.
- Knife, fork, spoon or Spork.

Can you go straight to DofE gold?
Once you are 16 you can do your Gold DofE programme. If you’ve jumped straight into your Gold DofE programme you’ll need to do a further six months either Volunteering or in whichever one of your Physical or Skills activities you spent more time on.
Does DofE look good on your CV?
A DofE Award also looks good on your CV and can be useful when applying for educational courses and jobs.
Do universities care about DofE?
So, yes, universities do like to see a Duke of Edinburgh Award on your UCAS form, but only insofar as it tells them something about you. They don’t care about it per se.
