Is the gear shift release lever part of the shift cable?
Try spraying a little bit of contact cleaner in the leaver to clean out any “gunk” that much be interfering with the lever’s movement. The gear shift release lever is not part of the shift cable assembly. I had the same issue with the release button on my Volvo shifter.
