Melanzana Is Colorado’s Most Coveted (and Reclusive) Clothing Line. The small Leadville company’s fleeces have become the Beanie Babies of the outdoor-gear world. Melanzana’s fleeces—available only in Leadville, at the brand’s lone store—have essentially become the Beanie Babies of the adventure world.
Are Melanzanas worth it?
For those taking on long distance thru-hikes, I really recommend carrying a Melanzana as it can double as a sleep shirt, base layer, and provides a lot of warmth for its weight. Durability: I’m known to rip, tear, or break gear.

At Melanzana that’s okay—it’s part of the allure. The owner and 20-year Leadville resident, Fritz Howard, has made some intentional choices—sometimes sacrificing profits—to be (and remain) a local Main Street business. As a result, Melanzana has become part of the local identity of Leadville.

Unfortunately for anyone not willing to make the trek to Leadville, the brand doesn’t sell its gear online. As Denver magazine 5280 wrote, founder Fritz Howard did do online and phone sales at one point, but it got so out of control they couldn’t keep stock in their one store.
