Why use a poultice? A poultice is used to draw out infection and keep the area clean to prevent further reinfection. Modern poultice dressings (such as Animalintex) contain boric acid and tragacanth, which work as an antiseptic and help draw out the pus.

Animalintex combines proven active ingredients with a 170g/m needled cotton wool for extra strength and ease of use. Animalintex is an effective healing aid that can be applied as a hot or cold wet poultice or dry wound dressing.

How do you use Animalintex for hoof abscess?
Elizabeth’s abscess poultice method:
- Make a hoof-sized hash tag of tape.
- Cut a hoof sized piece of the Animalintex.
- Dampen the Animalintex with warm water.
- Don’t medicate the dirt!
- Use Elastikon or Vet-wrap to secure the wet Animalintex.
- Place duct tape square over foot and form to fit.
How long do you leave a bread poultice on?
Bread poultice
- Warm the milk in a small pan on low heat.
- Turn off the stove, remove the pan from heat, and let it cool so it’s warm to the touch — not too hot.
- Place the slice of bread in the pan and let it soften.
- Stir the milk and bread to make a paste.
- Apply the paste to the skin and leave on for 15 minutes.
How long do you leave Animalintex on for?
Apply hot (110–120°F), wet Animalintex every 8 hours for up to 3 days. Consult veterinarian if condition persists.
Can you poultice with a shoe on?
The poultice will lie much closer to the foot without the shoe but you can poultice with the shoe on . Standing the foot (tubbing) in warm Epsom salts and water will help I do am and pm for about 10 to 15 minutes then poultice . It can help the farrier to locate the area of concern .
How long should you poultice a horse?
