The river is about 110 miles long and generally flows in a northerly direction, which is one of only two or three in the world. The Flint River, Cass River and Titabawassee River join the Shiawassee just southwest of the City of Saginaw and together form the Saginaw River which drains into the Saginaw Bay.

Where is the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge located?
The refuge’s headquarters is located about 5 miles south of Saginaw off of highway M-13 on the corners of Curtis and Mower Road. Office hours (Temporarily Suspended) closed all federal holidays. The Wildlife Drive (Closed for the season) meanders past forests, grasslands, marshes, open water pools, and the Shiawassee River. The best way to see waterfowl and other wildlife is via the refuge’s trail system on foot or with a mountain bike where permitted. Shiawassee has four trail systems that total more than 14 miles.
