What happens after filing a 51A?
After DCF receives a 51A report, they evaluate the allegations and determine the safety of the children. Immediately after the report is received, DCF works to gather sufficient information regarding the allegations in order to determine if allegations meets the Department’s criteria for suspected abuse and/or neglect.
What is a 51A report in MA?
A 51A report is generated when DCF receives a report of alleged abuse and/or neglect of a child somewhere in Massachusetts. As previously discussed in this space, the individual reporting neglect abuse can be either a mandated reporter, such as a teacher or doctor, or a layperson, such as a neighbor.

The five types of critical situations that need to be addressed and reported on as ethical responsibility are domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult, danger to self, and danger to others.
Does a 51A show up on a background check?
The 51A will not show up in what is ordinarily referred to as a “background check”. In Mass. those are usually CORIs (i.e., Criminal Offender Record Information checks).

(Ch. 119, § 51A) Under the law, mandated reporters are protected from liability in any civil or criminal action and from any discriminatory or retaliatory actions by an employer. The written report must be submitted to DCF within 48 hours after the oral report has been made.
How old can you be to stay home alone in Massachusetts?

Can you ignore DCF?
No but if you do not cooperate, DCF will escalate the matter. While DCF alone cannot force you to participate, they will involve a judge by filing a neglect petition in Superior Court and asking the judge to order you to cooperate with their conditions. This is especially true in high risk cases.
Are volunteers mandated reporters in Massachusetts?
While not mandated reporters according to MA law, volunteers serving as program staff must, under the University policy, notify the Associate Chancellor for Compliance who will then notify DCF.
