What is the prep for a Modified Barium Swallow?
Before a Barium Swallow, you cannot eat or drink anything for 12 hours before the test. During a Modified Barium Swallow test, you will remain standing or stay seated upright. During a Barium Swallow, you will lie down on a table. You may eat or drink various foods and liquids during a Modified Barium Swallow test.
Do you need to fast for a Barium Swallow test?
You will need to stop eating and drinking for about 8 hours before the swallowing test. Generally, this means after midnight. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant before scheduling a barium swallow test.

Which is better for aspiration barium or baritop 100?
For everyone else use a barium sulphate suspension such as Baritop 100 (in suspected aspiration you can swap to barium sulphate suspension once you have excluded it with water soluble contrast medium). If possible, it is better to use barium as it absorbs x-rays much better and therefore gives more detail.
