A Proto-Persona (or Ad-Hoc Persona) is a persona that is created using a project stakeholder’s intuition and anecdotal evidence (“ad-hoc” meaning improvised or impromptu). So the primary difference between proto-personas and true personas is the lack of background research and study when considering proto-personas.

You create a proto-persona by firstly gathering various different stakeholders who are familar with your product in a room ( no more than 12). You ask either individuals or small groups to generate persona’s for the product in a certain period of time ( say 15 mins ). They then present the persona’s back to the group.
