What causes white smoke from a generator?
WHITE SMOKE occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. If white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes of this are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing.
What causes a diesel generator to smoke?
The black smoke is composed primarily of elemental carbon from incomplete combustion of diesel fuel and traces of engine lubricant. Over-fueling can be caused by diesel fuel injector wear that enlarges the nozzle hole or erodes the injector needle and allows excess fuel to flow into the combustion chamber.
Why do I have white smoke coming out of my diesel engine?
Un-burned fuel travels through the exhaust system & exits out the tailpipe which will produce a scent of rich, un-burnt diesel. This causes white smoke. Other causes of white smoke include lack of compression, or water/coolant entering the combustion chamber. Check the fuel injectors. They may have worn out. Replacing the injectors will reduce it.
Why do I get white smoke from my Generator?
Since the gasket is blown between the combustion chamber and the pushrod housing, it will naturally suck in oil from the crankcase that lubricates the pushrods. This oil will then be combusted with the incoming fuel and air mixture and white exhaust will flow out of your generator’s exhaust.

Is it possible for a fuel filter to produce white smoke?
Yes. If the fuel is contaminated with water or some other foreign material it is possible that it will produce white smoke. The best way to test the fuel is to pull the filter and put it in a clear glass. Wait a few minutes and see if there is any separation. Can air in fuel cause white smoke? Yes. This is another common cause of white smoke.
