How do you check a rod bolt stretch?
The only way to ensure the rod bolt has achieved this proper clamp load is to measure it with a rod bolt stretch gauge. The gauge fits over the bolt to measure its free length. Then the bolt is tightened until the stretch spec is achieved.
Can you over torque rod bolts?
Torquing is supposed to stretch the bolts a certain amount. Really good builders will actually measure the length of the bolt before and after installation and tighten them to a certain length. Torquing too high can permanently deform the bolt and make it clamp less than of torqued properly.
How do you loosen a connecting rod bolt?
It is so simple. Put the rod in a vise and using a brass hammer just tap the bolts out of the rod.
Can you reuse 5.7 Hemi rod bolts?
The rod bolts are torque to yield so DO NOT reuse.
Do you have to resize rods with ARP bolts?
yes, you are supposed to do it.. the new fasteners can distort the rod compared to the stock hardware. 1/15/12 9:02 p.m.
Do you have to torque your rod bolts?
Torqueing your rod bolts without pre-determining the required torque to achieve the correct rod bolt stretch is not recommended. However if this is the only tightening method available to you, DO NOT EXCEED THE TORQUE AMOUNT INDICATED FOR YOUR BOLTS. NOTE: Your Crowerods are totally rebuildable.
How is torque measured on a connecting rod?
We tested this connecting rod and ARP bolt dry, then with engine oil, and then with ARP Ultra-Torque with the same 90 lb-ft torque and recorded a ridiculous variation in the actual bolt stretch numbers. After using the proper lube and applying the spec torque, the stretch was still only at 0.005-inch instead of the actual 0.006-inch minimum.
Where do I find the rod bolt part number?
Check the tag to find the rod bolt part number used to fasten your connecting rods. Rod bolt length listed here is the measurement from under the head to the end. STEP 2: Use the chart below to determine the recommended lubricant, rod bolt stretch and torque amounts.
How does torque affect the stretch of a bolt?
This will show that as torque remains the same, as better lube is used the bolt stretch increases because more torque is used to stretch the bolt instead of overcoming friction. One column also shows the effect of tightening the bolt five times in a row and what affect that has on stretch.
