Will bad EGR cause oil consumption?
Would excessive oil burning be caused by a bad EGR valve? Your TJ doesn’t have an EGR valve. Worn rings cause excessive oil consumption. Even if you had an EGR vavle, it wouldn’t have anything to do with oil use.
Does EGR burn oil?
EGR drops combustion temperatures, so plugged EGR would cause high NOx reading at a smog check. I don’t know how this would make you burn oil… Make sure the oil isn’t making its way into your coolant. That would indicate something like a headgasket.
Can a bad EGR valve affect engine performance?
Well, EGR problems depend on whether the valve is stuck closed or stuck open. These are the symptoms of a bad EGR valve that you should be aware of. As the EGR valve monitors the volume of exhaust gases entering the engine, it is obvious that any issue with it will affect the engine performance.
Why do diesel engines use EGR to lubricate?
Diesel engines using EGR systems to lubricate oils will also require higher a level of dispersancy because of increased soot loading in the oil. Without increased dispersancy, the higher levels of soot and particulate matter will not stay in suspension in the form of smaller material, increasing wear to liner, ring and valve train.
Can a bad EGR cooler cause an engine to overheat?
If the EGR cooler has any issues that restrict the flow of exhaust gases through the cooler it can cause the engine to overheat. Over time, carbon can build up on the inside of the EGR cooler and restrict flow through the cooler.
How does EGR affect the oxidation rate of oil?
Cooled EGR occurs when the engine coolant absorbs exhaust gas heat before entering the combustion chamber. Because the engine coolant takes up the heat from exhaust gases, the engine cooling system runs hotter, therefore the oil gets hotter. Oil oxidation rate doubles with every 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
