What is the difference between D3 and D4 in a Honda Accord?
Drive (D4) — Use this position for your normal driving. Drive (D3) – This position is similar to D4, except only the first three gears are selected. Use D3 to provide engine braking when going down a steep hill. D3 can also keep the transmission from cycling between third and fourth gears in stop-and-go driving.
Does driving in D3 save gas?
Currently, the D is ‘overdrive’ in almost all vehicles – the main purpose of which is to save fuel. Driving the car in this gear than the lower modes means you can have nearly 15% improved gas mileage. In short, the D3 gear utilizes the first three gears in an automatic transmission or locks it on the third gear.
What’s the problem with Honda Accord D4 light?
The problem: The D4 light comes on (sometimes intermittently) and the car gets stuck in a higher gear than 1st. That is, it doesn’t shift through the gears, but remains in what seems to be 3rd. Manually putting the transmission into 1st works though.

How many gears does a Honda Accord downshift?
It will downshift 1,2, or 3 gears depending on speed, to slow vehicle down “downshifting ” this will save ur breaks from alot of wear & tear! Now I got my information rite from the owners manual in my 2000 Honda accord also by driving in both gears it is exactly on point & correct!
What are the colors of the D4 light?
The wire colors are red and green/blue. Short the two pins of this plug with a short piece of wire or paper clip. Turn the key to the on position and the D4 will blink a code. One short blink = lock up clutch does not engage/disengage or unstable idle speed. Lockup control solenoid valve A Two short blinks = lockup clutch does not engage.
