How do I trace a switch that does nothing?
Turn off the circuit that controls power to that room. If you’re not sure the switch is on a specific circuit, turn off the main breaker. Remove the switch plate and double check that wires are attached to a circuit — if there aren’t any or they’re all capped, the switch is “dead” and doesn’t control anything.
Is there a fuse in a light switch?
Your fuse box, or consumer unit, will either have fuses or trip switches. Modern electric circuits are fitted with a circuit breaker fuse system; if a fault develops, a switch is tripped and the circuit is broken. Older ones have fuse holders and when a fuse is blown it must be replaced or rewired.

You hook the tone generator up to the wires at the switch, and then you use the probe to follow the wires through the wall. With any luck you will find your way to a ceiling or wall box. Can a 120V outlet be pulled from a 240V box?
If you cannot pull new cable with a proper neutral AND ground conductor separately, then the only legal way to attain 120V would be to use a 240-120V transformer and power the transformer from the 240V circuit, then let it create a new 120V circuit from it with a legal Neutral that is now bonded to ground at the transformer.
What happens if you have a bad light switch?
If everything checks out, you may have a bad switch or faulty wiring at the connection. If the light had been flickering, you’ll probably need to go a bit further. The problem may be a loose connection or a tripped wall outlet on the same circuit. The first thing you’ll need to do is turn off power to the light switch before handling it.
