Pull the console cover up, slip your hand up under and feel around till you find the plug, turn it ccw a bit and it will come out, r&r the bulb, and reverse process. I just did this today on my 08.

To get the 4×4 shift knob off I had to stand in the Jeep with my roof off and straddle the console and pull hard and it popped right off. You just pull up on the console piece around the shifters and it pops right out. The light is right on the driver side of the gear shifter in a little socket that you turn and pull it out.
