when the fluid level is low it will hesitate to go into gear cold, and the torque converter will hang locked up when stopping. as for life span, i have seen unmaintained and abused E4OD’s blow at 30k miles, and very well maintained transmissions last over 600,000 miles.

When the computer detects the tranny is slipping (usually 300rpm above normal parameters) it automatically applies full line pressure so as to clamp the clutches and bands as tight as they will go. Thats the hard shifting. Disconnecting the battery resets the computer.
What kind of transmission does an F150 E4OD have?

How often does the E4OD transmission neutral out?
My E4OD transmission neutrals out intermittently in Overdrive and 4th gear. It seems to be very erratic, sometimes you can make a 300 mile trip witout any problems, and other times it will neutral out 3 or 4 times on a 10 mile trip. When the problem is not present it works perfectly.
