How do you protect your vehicles when welding electronics?
Back-To-Basics: Vehicle Protection When Welding
- Be careful of burning painted surfaces, glass, moldings, and interior. Remove all moldings in the area to be welded and remove glass if possible.
- Avoid welding near NVH and other foams/sealers.
- Avoid welding near electrical systems or with the battery connected.
Can you weld on a car with a computer?
AdvertisementsWelding and creating an electrical current through the ECU can damage the computer irreparably. This computer is essential to your car functioning, and you would not be able to drive if the ECU becomes damaged or destroyed. Protecting the ECU is necessary if you are going to try to weld on your vehicle.
Is it okay to use computer while welding?
Data corruption or loss would be the most noticeable, but there is some sure residual hardware damage. Even a slight brownout that might not be noticeable can still cause the issues.
Why should you disconnect the battery when welding?
When the vehicle’s battery is connected, a path to all of its electrical systems potentially exists. The energy from the welders can therefore over energize and thus damage the electrical components. Any time a welder or dent puller is used a battery should be disconnected.
What should be taken before welding on a hybrid vehicle?
Follow us on @Ask_ICAR for daily updates. When you’re working on a hybrid vehicle, what precautions should be taken before welding? When welding on a hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) or pure-electric vehicle (EV), follow the same precautions with the 12-volt system as when welding on a conventional vehicle.
How many service plugs does a Toyota Prius have?
Our photo car is a Toyota Prius PHEV, which has three battery packs: one supporting the normal hybrid function of capturing energy from braking, and two providing the Prius’s short-range EV operation. Consequently, there are three service plugs.
Can You welding on a pure electric vehicle?
When welding on a hybrid-electric (HEV) or pure-electric (EV) vehicle, follow the same precautions with the 12-volt system as when welding on a conventional vehicle. In addition, there are precautions to take with the high voltage battery.
What makes a Prius more efficient in stop and go traffic?
The braking action of the motor generator when you release the throttle is what charges the battery. So, the vehicle becomes more efficient in stop-and-go traffic. (Note: The new-generation 2004 Prius has been upgraded with a 50-kilowatt electric motor from the earlier 33-kw version.
