Currently, the Prius Prime (aka Prius Plug-In or PHV) can be equipped with a 160 W solar panel (efficiency of 22.5%), but just for auxiliary purposes. The new 860 W system is designed to charge the traction battery while parking or driving.

Do you need a trickle charger for a Prius?
For clarity, you don’t want a trickle charger, but a proper automatic charger like one of the two suggested above. A trickle charger will take forever (if ever) to charge a totally flat battery. A charger like the ones mentioned above will do a proper charge then revert to trickle charging to ensure it stays charged.
Why are Prius Prime batteries over lead acid?
The only exception to this is Prius Prime. The reason they are used in our cars over lead acid batteries is because they do not spill. In the even of an accident the battery acid could leak in a regular battery and cause issues with getting acid all over next to the high voltage in your trunk.
