What could be stopping my car from starting?
Car still won’t start?
- Dead battery. A dead battery is the most common reason why a car won’t start.
- Battery corrosion. Corrosion on your battery can spell trouble.
- Bad starter motor.
- Bad timing belt.
- Broken or cracked distributor cap.
- Bad ignition coil.
- Clogged fuel filter.
Will a clogged fuel filter stop a car from starting?
Unless totally blocked, rarely will a bad fuel filter keep your engine from starting. On a vehicle where a fuel filter has never been changed, the dirty filter can cause erratic fuel flow, resulting in longer than usual cranking before the engine starts. Check your owner’s manual on filter replacement intervals.
Why does my 1999 Toyota Avalon not start?
1999 Avalon would not start this morning. Did notice windows were slow the day before. Replaced the battery and still would not start. Husband started looking @ it (was his own VW mechanic) and found if he banged on the starter it would start. Besides having 3 sets of tires this is the first problem.

After few more tries, and about 15 to 25 minutes, the engine finally would crank slowly and finally got started. At that time, everything seem normal again, except that all the settings for the LCD display (time, date.etc.) and the audio system all went to the original default and need to be setup again.
