How do you know if your pulleys are bad?
Another common symptom of a possible issue with the idler pulley is squealing from the engine belts. In some instances a bad pulley may bind or slip and cause the belt to squeal when the engine is first started. The issue will eventually worsen as the pulley continues to wear.
How do you diagnose a bad idler pulley?
Signs and Symptoms of a Bad Idler Pulley
- Chattering, Squealing, or Chirping Sound.
- Corroded Surface.
- Excessively Loose Idler Pulley.
- A Bad Idler Pulley May Spin Excessively.
- Slow to No Spin or Binding.
When should I replace pulleys?
An idler pulley is expected to wear over time, and eventually the pulley will fail. Replacement intervals for idler pulleys vary, but are usually within the 50,000 to 100,000 mile range. Replacement often coincides with expected serpentine/accessory belt replacement periods.
What noise does a bad pulley make?
Squealing. When the engine is idling, a bad pulley may make a squealing sound. This is due to the bearings in the pulley going bad. The bearings may also make various other sounds such as clattering or even a rumbling sound, making the vehicle sound as if there was much more wrong than a bad pulley.
What happens when you have a bad idler pulley?
If the surface of the idler pulley wears, or the pulley seizes or binds it may cause the engine belt to squeal as a result of it rubbing against the surface of the pulley. In some instances a bad pulley may bind or slip and cause the belt to squeal when the engine is first started.
What should I do if my lawn mower pulley is not working?
Hold pulley in one hand & spin bearing with opposite index finger, a good bearing will spin smoothly & a bad bearing will be rough when turning. If bearing does not spin smooth, replace complete idler pulley, comes with new bearing installed. Very bad idea.
How to tell if a pulley is out of balance?
Sometimes you can tell just by listening and feeling. If you are running a single phase motor, you will have uneven pulses of power compared to a 3 phase… Add in just the right pulley diameters, and you could get some harmonics going… The motor might be out of balance, far more rotating weight there, than the pulleys.
What is the runout of a 4 wheel pulley?
My 4″ motor pulley measures 0.003 radial & 0.002 axial. Balance not checked. My 8.5″ lower wheel pulley measures 0.005 radial and 0.006 axial. This pulley is balanced. 2. If this runout is an issue, do you guys recommend having them trued up in a shop & balanced, or just get new pulleys?
Which is the best belt for sheet metal pulleys?
Look at it! Assembled sheet metal pulleys could suffer from that. Very often the Fenner Powertwist belts will reduce vibration and other than cost I don’t know why you want to avoid them. Look for the belt series with the slots on the ID; sometimes they run smoother.
