I understand that Honda/Acura still uses that design; wish Subaru would. The Acura does have multiple sensors hidden in the weather seal. Completely dead battery can still open the rear hatch to get out the jumper cables. Not sure what happens with the powered lift gate in a dead battery condition and you can’t get to the inside release.

Why does the tailgate open on a 2018 Subaru Outback?
With a 2018 Outback the trunk opened after pressing the latch and holding for 10s. After that, manually raise the gate all the way open to the top, then manually close again. After that everything was back to normal. I had a similar issue. Tailgate was open overnight resulting in a dead battery.
