Can a TPMS tell if your tire pressure is low?
DonÂ’t put too much faith in your tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS)—it often won’t give a sign that they are low until itÂ’s too late. Here’s how to set up your TPMS system so that you are never caught without enough air.
When to reset a tire pressure monitoring system?
Properly inferring tire pressures this way can be a problem when the tires are unevenly worn, or if you replace only two worn tires instead of all four. You can reset the system to allow for wear when all the tire pressures are correct. The procedure varies from vehicle to vehicle, and this one won’t necessarily work on yours.
Is there a way to scan a tire pressure sensor?
GM has a special tool for this, but I’ll bet a nice strong magnet from RadioShack would work. On Toyotas, apparently the only way to activate the sensors is with the Toyota TPMS tool or scan tool. Your mileage may vary. You’ll need to find out exactly what procedure your vehicle needs any time you rotate tires or install winter tires.
How does a tire pressure reading system work?
Higher-end vehicles use a direct-reading system of battery-powered senders mounted inside the tire, communicating with the TPMS by means of small antennas in each wheel well. Every few minutes, the TPMS will interrogate the senders in the wheels, acquire a “true” pressure reading and transfer the message to the in-car display.
What does it mean when tire pressure warning comes on?
Some of the more sophisticated tire-pressure monitoring systems will tell drivers which tire is out of range or display real-time air pressure in each tire—including spare tires, in some cases. If your tire-pressure warning light comes on, don’t ignore it; you could be getting a flat.

Why do I need a tire pressure check?
A monthly pressure check of all your tires can help you keep them at the optimal level of inflation and will enable you to identify slow leaks early—possibly even before the pressure drops low enough for the warning light to come on.
Can a tire pressure sensor detect under inflation?
Some units have functions in measuring and alerting temperatures of the tire as well. dTPMS can detect under- inflation in any combination (be it 1 tire or all tires, at the same time) The indirect tire pressure monitoring system is a standard for European countries.
