This covers all 911, 964 and 993 air-cooled cylinder heads. This is an outline of how we go about the repair of these heads. We have been asked many times how we do this work. This will go through all the steps we take to ensure the heads are at their highest performance level and quality.
What do we do when rebuilding all Porsche 911 engines?

What are the valves on a Porsche 911?
Now the valves stems and valve heads are polished and the valve sealing faces dressed typically at a 45° angle. If any further back cuts are required, they are done now. The valve margins are checked now to make sure the valve margins are still thick enough for continued use.
How tall are the seats on a Porsche 911?
We measure the head heights now so any adjustment required on seat heights can be done. When cutting the seats angles we measure off the head face where it seals to the cylinder. This ensures the seats are all at the same height. If the head heights differ, this can change the seat heights.
Are there head studs on a Porsche Carrera?

What to do during crankcase assembly on Porsche 911?
• Make sure right side connecting rods for cylinders 4,5, and 6 are pointing down. • Check that nose bearing (A) is correctly seated in case. • Slowly turn crankshaft back and forth to check for binding or interference. • Porsche special tool P221 can be used to support the left side connecting rods during crankcase assembly.
How to install nose bearing on Porsche 911?
— Install crankshaft nose bearing locating pin in crankcase half. ^ Without nose bearing outer sealing O-ring in place, lay crankshaft nose bearing in crankcase so that it locks into locating pin (A). Draw a line (B) on each side of bearing to use as a reference when installing crankshaft assembly. — Remove nose bearing.
When to replace the intermediate shaft on a Porsche 911?
If the intermediate shaft gear is worn or damaged, the replacement gear must be matched to the crankcase and crankshaft drive gear. See 130 Crankcase and Crankshaft for checking and replacing. • The intermediate shaft is hollow and should be cleaned out whenever the engine is being reconditioned and in case of engine bearing failure.
