on a GQ it on the top of the left hand chassis rail right at the front.

Found it its located left hand side of the block (right hand side if looking from under the bonnet) on a flat part of the block behind the alternator.

On both the 4.2 diesel pickups (2005) I have the vin is below the right door on the chassis. The numbers are not easy to find as they are barely visible even if you know where to look. About six inches behind the gearbox cross member , there is a slot about 2 inches long in the vertical outside of the chassis.
