Is there a timing belt on a Nissan 350Z?
Here is a list of timing belts and timing chains for a Nissan 350z and 370z. Reference the model year with the corresponding engine to see if your car has a belt or a chain. Which models have a belt/chain? Both the 3.5 L and 3.7 L engines for the 350z and 370z have timing chains.
When do you know to change the timing chain?
A timing chain runs inside the engine, as it needs to be lubricated by the engine oil. A timing belt typically needs to be replaced between 40,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle and it’s a few hundred dollar repair. A timing chain doesn’t need to be replaced unless there is a problem with it.
What happens when the timing chain loosens on a Nissan?
When timing chains loosen it leads to engine rattles, issues with misfiring, problems accelerating and – eventually – bent valves or rods and catastrophic engine failure.
Why is my timing chain wearing out on my RX 350?
The timing chain problems are not uncommon, especially in high-mileage vehicles. Similarly to any other moving mechanical components inside any engine, a timing chain is subject to wear. A timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil. Lack of oil changes, low oil level or poor oil quality can cause the timing chain to wear faster.

When to change the timing chain on a maxima?
EVERY Maxima built after 1994 has a timing chain. The chain doesn’t have to be replaced. The chain guides and hydraulic tensioners will have problems before the chain. If/when the guides/tensioners need service then change the chains. You have a problem when there is a rattling from the timing chains that doesn’t go away after a minute or two.
