Is it bad to put a fuse in the negative terminal of a battery?

Is it bad to put a fuse in the negative terminal of a battery?

Since the negative terminal of the battery is normally considered “Ground” or “Zero Volts”, a fuse in the negative lead would leave the rest of the circuit “hot” – usually Not a Good Thing. Recommended practice is to place the fuse near the positive terminal of the battery, so the whole circuit will be dead if the fuse blows.

What happens if a fuse blows on the return line?

The fuses are placed in the positive lines from the battery and close to the battery. If a fault occurs on the line between the fuse and the load the fuse blows and current flow stops. A ground fault on the return line is unlikely to cause any problems as there is no significant voltage on it.

Why is my wife’s a / C fuse not tight fitting?

The B+ wire from the alternator to the battery appears to be too small a gauge. I went to a larger gauge wire and replaced the fuse block on top of the battery. It also appears that the contacts for the three green fuses are not to tight fitting. My wife’s a/c went out again last week.

Where to place the fuse on a battery?

Recommended practice is to place the fuse near the positive terminal of the battery, so the whole circuit will be dead if the fuse blows. (Of course, if the positive terminal is considered Ground, place the fuse near the negative terminal.)

Where is the fuse on the battery terminal?

Fuse on battery terminal blown??? Long story short, blown the fuse that is located on the battery wires that connect to the battery. Was sold the wrong battery wasn’t paying attention put negative to positive and vice versa. I am wondering if there is anything else I might expect.

What causes the fuse box above the battery to overheat?

It tends to get a break in the wire near the fuse box that then arcs and overheats; this is not a problem with a short otherwise the fuse would blow, this is an arc. I have a 2005 Golf MKIV and it did this also. Lost a/c, fans, overheated. The B+ wire from the alternator to the battery appears to be too small a gauge.

What should I do if my battery fuse is blown?

If those are the ONLY things broken when the fuse is blown (make sure that turn signals, brake lights, etc DO work), I would leave a blown fuse in there for the long drive and only try to fix it before a short drive. Don’t risk further damage by replacing the fuse without examining the wiring first.
