Why does my Subaru Outback rear hatch not open?
A few problems: the battery died one month after I purchased. Recently the rear hatch won’t fully open (it stayed half-way) and today it’s even worse – after closing it, it will NOT open anymore. I didn’t touch the memory button. I also checked the owner’s manual but cannot fix this issue at my own effort.

Power windows/locks are pretty solid these days, the motors and mechanisms have been engineered and tested extensively, to a pretty high number of cycles, before failure. The hatch mechanisms, not-so-much. I’d actually choose a “no power hatch” option, if there were such a thing, without hesitancy.

The only way I can open and close it now is by crawling through the car and using the small finger hole manual release. I’ve replaced the entire latch assembly with a brand new one thinking the issue was simply the motor that operated the latch had quit.
