How do you open the tailgate on a Nissan Pathfinder?
The liftgate can be opened by the instrument panel switch, liftgate request switch and the keyfob even if the vehicle is locked. The liftgate will individually unlock and open. Once the liftgate is closed, its lock will align to the vehicle’s lock or unlock status.

One of those buttons is Power Door On/Off. With the button set to the off position the rear door behaves exactly as you have described. Set it to on and it will go back to “normal” behavior. It can be easy to accidentally hit this button when getting in and out of the vehicle.
