Fired it up and it ran beautifully for 20 seconds. I gave it throttle and once I got to half throttle… “Snap!” Motor died and the timing chain had broken.

If there is no damage on the sprockets and no binding of the camshaft, just install a new chain and quit worrying. With the timing chain off – put the piston at BDC and rotate the cam clockwise with a socket on one of the sprocket bolts – if the cam turns easily enough you might try rotating it counter clockwise, but the bolt may loosen.
