What causes fuel Guage problem on Harley Davidson?

As others have suggested, the float could be hanging up and lastly, the sending unit could be shorted out (not open or the gauge wouldn’t move). While you’ve got the float (sending unit) out, check the sending unit’s variable resistance with an ohm-meter to make sure its good.

What do I do if my gas gauge is not working?

In most cases, to gain access to the fuel tank sending unit mount / fuel pump mounting hole, you’ll need to drop the gas tank down. Be sure to do this when there is either minimal gas in the vehicle, or it’s been siphoned out.

Thanks. LOL yeah wouldn’t that be nice if it was always full. I bought the bike now I have to save up for the gas.

What’s the fuel resistance on a Harley Davidson?

As the float moves up and down with fuel level, resistance changes, resulting in a change in current to the gauge, reflected as fuel level. Low resistance for full, high resistance for empty. On mine, the manual indicates 40 ohms for full, 250 ohms for empty.

How does a fuel gauge work on a boat?

On older vehicles or boats, the fuel gauge will usually have 2 terminals. One of these terminals receives 12V of power when the ignition is turned on. The other terminal is the sending wire from the sending unit. The gauge itself is then grounded.

What should I do if my fuel gauge is stuck?

If the gauge gives you a full reading, the sending unit is faulty and should be replaced. Verify that all of the wiring is securely connected to the back of the fuel gauge, which will require you to remove the dashboard to gain access to the instrument cluster.

What kind of gas Guage does a 04 Softail have?

My 04 softails gas guage shows full no matter how much gas is in it. I tried to do the forum search function and had no luck. I also could not find anything in my manual on trouble shooting the problem.

Why does my fuel Guage float keep hanging up?

I believe in 2004 there was a technical service bulletin (TSB) about the guage float hanging up inside the fuel tank. I also believe it’s due to the float sticking on something inside the tank and a simple Dremel/grind on the float stopped it from happening.

When reinstalling the tank plate tighten lightly all screws starting in the middle and working left right left right etc. Do not overtighten (18 to 25 inch lbs) these screws or you can strip the tank hole.
