What can I do about my Sportster clutch issue?
In my research of my issue, it’s when I saw guys recommending changing the inner plates to steel, Kevlar,etc…aftermarket plates and going with a non-rivet setup and the issue won’t get ya. At this point, my bike was already damaged and I didn’t know it.

I have found that the Other bikes I have been on (like you),, Can’t be compared to a 1200 sport. They are ALL, MUCH smoother and do not present the 1200 problem in take-off and clutch work…

I {Heart} Hookers. If the clutch grabs off the bars, and you have the proper end play in the cable, than the basket ISN’t adjusted correctly, or something is wrong with the ball/ramp assembly in the side cover. The ball/ramp isn’t throwing the actuator far enough to get the clutch to disengage.

When you start to accelerate the clutch immediately grabs off the bars too, it has now gotten to a point that the bike isn’t rideable. The primary oil level looks good, not too low or high. Clutch “should” be adjusted correctly,,,per the service manual. Though the symptoms are such that of a maladjusted clutch for sure.
Why is my Sportster clutch not working properly?
The bike was originally bought in May 2010 and traded back in in October 2010 because the guy wanted a bigger bike so it isn’t like it had been sitting for months when we bought it. I lubricated the cable today and adjusted the free play because it seem a little tight and that actually seemed to make the grab worse when engaging the clutch.

BT you turn adjuster IN until you feel drag, then back off a 1/2 to full turn. XL models, you turn the screw OUT till it seats, then in a 1/4 turn. Chain too tight. Usually just makes neutral hard to find. No…..if clutch was south, it would slip.
Which is easier to adjust Sportster clutch or Big Twin?
By the way the clutch on the sporty is easier to adjust than the big twin. Derby cover keeps the adjuyster in place not a set nut. Now one thought, what handlbar levers on on the bike?
