Will adjusting valves increase compression?
No. A compression test is used to measure the sealing in the cylinder, both through the valves and the rings. You cannot confer anything through a compression test as to the adjustment of the valves, because it doesn’t relate to that.
Does valve lash effect compression?
Yes, valve lash can affect compression results. Too tight = valve potentially open all the time. However over time it is VERY unlikely that lash would become too tight.
What happens if you dont adjust your valves?
Too much or too little valve clearance can result in poor performance or a rough idle because the engine can’t “breathe” normally and operate at peak efficiency. If there’s too little valve clearance, the valves won’t fully close, causing excessive heat, and the engine will lose power.
What causes compression in the intake and exhaust valves?
Once detected, the cylinder head must be removed, replaced or repaired. A valve spring is responsible for closing the intake and exhaust valves, once the camshaft has opened them. Over time valve springs can become brittle and break. As a result, allowing the valve to hang open, which will allow the compression to leak out.
Why do I have low compression in all cylinders?
If you have low compression in all cylinders, this is often the culprit. Also, your compression leak may not be in the pistons or head gasket but in the valves. Exhaust valves and air intake valves at the top of the cylinder can also get overheated, and leak gas or the valve seals can become too worn to seal the gas in properly.
Where does compression come from in an engine?
If there is a leak on the valves or the valve seats, the compression will leak out into your exhaust or the intake during the combustion process. In older engines, you had to resurface these valve seats several times during the car’s lifetime.
What does it mean when compression reading does not change?
If the compression readings do not change, then it would indicate a timing problem. If a valve seat cracks it will allow hot gases to leak; burning both the valve seat and the valve. Most cylinders heads are made of aluminum and expand at a different rate; compared to the metal valve seat.

Can a blown head gasket cause low compression?
If two cylinders next to each other both have low pressure, a blown head gasket is a likely culprit. If you discover you do have low compression, the only solution is to replace the leaking part whether it’s the piston, piston ring, camshaft, head gasket or valves.
